Medicinal Plants

Sikkim with its total geographical area of 7,096 sq km is bestowed with a huge diversity of flora and fauna.  The state is also a repository of potential medicinal plants and large scale cultivation and processing of these valuable medicinal plants can no doubt raise the Socio-economic condition of the state.  Traditional system of medicine has been used from time immoral by the ethnic groups during emergency and trauma.

 

            Today indiscriminate and merciless extraction of these valuable medicinal plants from these natural wild habitat coupled with various other factors have posed a serious threat to their survival throughout the state.  Judicious use and large sc ale cultivation of these life saving plants should be encourage.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rhododendron

   Amongst the many floral treaties of Sikkim Himalaya one of the earliest ones may be found over the genus Rhododendron (Gk. rhodo = red, dendrons = tree ).
