TWO DAYS“Interactive
Meet foR Bioinformatics Centers of North Eastern
States” at
Gangtok
First two days Interactive Meet for Bioinformatics
Centers of North Eastern States was organized by
Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology on 12th
and 13th of November 2008 at Chintan Bhavan,
Gangtok, Sikkim with the support of Department of
Biotechnology, Government of India. The main objective
of the meet was to provide a common platform for
interaction amongst the North Eastern states.
The website of Sikkim Bioinformatics Centre (www.bioinformaticssikkim.gov.in)
was launched in the occasion and the audio-visual
animation CD on basic biological processes developed
by Sikkim Bioinformatics Centre as a teaching aid was
also released during the Meet.
Shri. M.L.Arrawatia (IFS), Secretary, Department of
Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, said
that India was one of the first countries in the world
to establish a national grid of bioinformatics centers
as the Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet)
in the mid 80s. Over the years this network has grown
into a highly sophisticated scientific infrastructure
for bioinformatics involving state-of-the art
computational and communication facilities. He laid
special emphasis on the rich bio resources of Sikkim
and documentation of these bioresources. Shri.
Arrawatia also highlighted the activities of Sikkim
Bioinformatics center
Dr. Madan Mohan, Adviser, DBT, GOI proposed to have
all the north east Bioinformatics Centres under one
umbrella and the network of this centre be named as
North Eastern Bioinformatics Network (NEBINet). North
East Hill University, Shillong was latter decided to
be the nodal center for NEBINet. He also showed his
expectations to have more such BIFs in the North
Eastern states in the coming year.
Sub-Distributed Information Centers and Bioinformatics
Infrastructure Facilities Centers of North Eastern
states made power point presentation on their
activities undertaken by them including infrastructure
development. The programme ended successfully with
vote of thanks by the Coordinator, Sikkim
Bioinformatics Centre, Shri. B. C. Basistha.
