TWO DAYS“Interactive Meet foR Bioinformatics    Centers of   North Eastern States” at Gangtok

First two days Interactive Meet for Bioinformatics Centers of North Eastern States was organized by Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology on 12th and 13th of November 2008 at Chintan Bhavan, Gangtok, Sikkim with the support of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The main objective of the meet was to provide a common platform for interaction amongst the North Eastern states.

The website of Sikkim Bioinformatics Centre (www.bioinformaticssikkim.gov.in) was launched in the occasion and the audio-visual animation CD on basic biological processes developed by Sikkim Bioinformatics Centre as a teaching aid was also released during the Meet.

Shri. M.L.Arrawatia (IFS), Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, said that India was one of the first countries in the world to establish a national grid of bioinformatics centers as the Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet) in the mid 80s.  Over the years this network has grown into a highly sophisticated scientific infrastructure for bioinformatics involving state-of-the art computational and communication facilities. He laid special emphasis on the rich bio resources of Sikkim and documentation of these bioresources. Shri. Arrawatia also highlighted the activities of Sikkim Bioinformatics center

Dr. Madan Mohan, Adviser, DBT, GOI proposed to have all the north east Bioinformatics Centres under one umbrella and the network of this centre be named as North Eastern Bioinformatics Network (NEBINet). North East Hill University, Shillong was latter decided to be the nodal center for NEBINet. He also showed his expectations to have more such BIFs in the North Eastern states in the coming year.

Sub-Distributed Information Centers and Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facilities Centers of North Eastern states made power point presentation on their activities undertaken by them including infrastructure development. The programme ended successfully with vote of thanks by the Coordinator, Sikkim Bioinformatics Centre, Shri. B. C. Basistha.
