Description

Branched shrub, 1.5m high, grayish brown bark and peels off in pink  flakes.

Uses  
Altitude 4500m - 5000m
Leaves

50-75mm long x 30-45mm broad, elliptical, tough, cordate at the base and mucronate at apex, margins recurved, matte leaf surface. bright green, glabrous ventral surface covered by rusty -brown tomentum, midrib and lateral vein also covered with tomentum. petioles 4-5mm.  borne on glabrous pedicles 15-20 mm long.

Corolla

broadly campanulate, 25-28mm long x 30 - 35mm broad, 5- lobed, lobes shortly   sub divided, lobules rounded.

brownish black

Ovary 5 - celled, glabrous, dark brownish - black.

Rhododendron

   Amongst the many floral treaties of Sikkim Himalaya one of the earliest ones may be found over the genus Rhododendron (Gk. rhodo = red, dendrons = tree ).
