Habitat : An erect or ascending annual or perennial herb or a shrub. Found in margins of sub- tropical and broad- leaved forests.
Distribution : Distributed to hilly districts throughout India.
Sikkim : Yuksom, Dzongu, Melli Jorethang.
Out side : West Bengal, Assam, China, Java, Japan, Bhutan (Chukka, Gaylegphug district, Punakha district, upper
Mo Chu district).
A rambling herb distinguished from A. aspera by the blade of the spinous bracteoles being reduced to two minute auricles each side of the base of the spines. Leaves elliptic oblong or oblong- lanceolate, rounded or cuneate at the base, thinly hairy. Flowers white or green in axillary and terminal spikes, fruits one- seeded.

Phytochemistry
Four new diterpenoid alkaloids 15- deacetylvakognavine, palmadine, palmasine and 6- acetylheteravisine isolated along with vakognavine, heteravisine, isoatisine and hitidine, structures of new compounds elucidated (Tetrahedron Lett. 1988, 29, 1875).
Medicinal
The plant is used as a diuretic and astringent.
