Habitat                        : A shrub or small tree thrives well in tropical and temperate region.

Distribution    : Distributed all over sub- tropical.

Sikkim            : Tarku, Mamring forest, Rhenock, Balwakhani, Chalisay to Aritar foot tract, Burtuk, Bay (Dzongu), Machung, Naitam (Assam- Lingjay).

Out side        : West Bengal, Assam, North East, Bhutan.

General        : Himalaya (Garhwal- Sikkim), Myanmar, Indo- China.

Morphological information

A shrub or small tree with a short indistinct trunk and short thick, irregular thorny branches armed with short sharp thorns. Leaves large, oval oblong, serrate, rounded apex, petioles without wings. Flowers large, axillary, in compact clusters of 3- 10, white inside and purple outside. Fruits lemon- yellow, large, oblong to oval, rough or warty, sometimes ridged, rind thick, core hollow. Pulp sparse, aromatic, sweet juice sacs, and small slender. Seeds oval, numerous.

Phytochemistry

 α- pinene, camphene, β- pinene, myrcene, α- phellandrene, 3 carene, (+) limonene, p- cymene,  -phellandrene, 3 carene, (+) limonene, p- cymene,  -phellandrene, 3carene, (+) limonene, p- cymene, ץ- terpinene, terpinolene, nonyl aldehyde and citronellal from essential oil.

 

Medicinal

Peel and pulp are made into marmalade. Juice is refrigerant and astringent. Preserved rind is used in dysentery.

Ayurvedic

The root is used in constipation and in tumors, removes colic; useful in vomiting, urinary calculus and caries of the teeth. The buds and flowers increase appetite, relieves vomiting, useful in tumors, abdominal complaints, asthma, cough, hiccough, intoxication. The ripe fruit is stimulant, digestible, tonic cures leprosy, relieves sore throat, cough, asthma thirst, hiccough. Good for the throat. The seeds are stimulant tonic; good for piles and in biliousness, cure inflammation and “ Kapha”.

 

Traditional

Fruit decoction is analgesic. It is effective in curing vomiting. The fruits and seeds are a cardiac tonic and useful in palpitation. The root is used to cure jaundice
