Habitat : Woody, tall climbing excessively branched prickly under shrub. It is grown, common at
low altitude, in shed and in sub-tropical to tropical climates throughout India.
Distribution : Distributed in sub-tropical to tropical region.
Sikkim : Naya Bazaar, Legship, Jorethang, Namchi, Rorathang, Chiso pani.
Out side : Kalimpong (West Bengal), Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Orrisa, Gujarat.
A tall climbing excessively branched, prickly under shrub; roots tuberous, prickles 0.6- 1.5 an straight or recurved; cladodes 2.5 cm curved, terete, spreading in tufts of 2- 6; chammelled beneath. Flowers in raceme pedicels jointed in the middle, anthers minute, oblong purplish; ovules 6.8 in each cell. Fruit a berry 0.4- 0.6 cm in diameter.

Phytochemistry
Four glycoside- compound A, shatavari I, shatavari II and shatavari IV isolated from roots; structure of shatavari IV elucidated.
Agrocultivation
Plant can be propagated from adventitious roots, which are dipped in liquid cowdung for 24 hours before planting in raised bed. The sprouted saplings are later transferred to bed 30 m in length and 20 m in breadth.
Ayurvedic
It is extensively used as a nutritive tonic in the preparation like "Shatavari Ghritha" and "Phala Ghritha".Preparation- it is prepared by mixing powdered root in Ghee, honey, sugar, long pepper etc. and given for sexual debility, both in males and females.
1. Medicated oils like "Narayana Taila" are prepared by boiling the juice of Asparagus racemosus, along with other medicines in sesame oil and used as a massage oil for neuromuscular pains such as rheumatism, stiff neck, hemiplegia etc.
2. The root with milk is used for Leucorrhoea and diarrhoea.
Unani
The root is used in " Halwa- I- supari Pak", for conception. It is used both by males and females "Halwa- I- ghaikwar", which is an anti inflammatory is used in aphrodisiac preparations "Majun Zanjibi". Majun Shir Bargadh Wale" and Majun Musli Pak". The seed of Asparagus racemosus “ Tukhm Halyun” is used in Majun Murrameh-ul-arwah.
