ABOUT THE CENTRE

State Tissue Culture Centre was established in the year 1994, as then under the State Forest Department, Government of Sikkim, which was later transferred to the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim along with the existing manpower in 1997. The laboratory since inception is actively working on the protocol development and standardization of protocol of economically important plant species of Sikkim. The species includes the orchids, medicinal plants, bamboo, large cardamom and other rare and endangered species. The laboratory, for the first time in the state, has successfully isolated and cultured cymbidium hybrid “Cymbidium sparkle green” through meristem in 1995 as no private and government laboratory was able to do it till then. The centre has imparted training on orchid tissue culture and orchid cultivation to the rural women of Sikkim and provided with orchid saplings on successful completion.
